Westminster St Margaret index
This house stood on the north side of Crown Street, about half way along. (The eastern end was Lower Crown Street, the western end Upper Crown Street.) According to the Westminster City Archives Research Group, it was originally called the Crown, and gave its name to Crown Street; however, it is called the “Rose & Crown Inne” on Morgan’s map of 1682, set on one of a maze of tiny alleys west of King Street, and the alley is un-named. In an application to transfer the license of the Anchor and Crown to 21 Crown Street in August 1858 it was mentioned that the Rose and Crown, which had been immediately opposite, “was already pulled down”. The whole of Crown Street disappeared ten years later under Government Offices. ***
