New Star & Crown, 3 Broadway, St Margaret, Westminster

Westminster St Margaret index

This pub stood on the south side of Broadway, near to where it runs into York Street. According to the Westminster City Archives Research Group, it was originally called the Black Boy, but it was called the New Star and Crown by 1809 and probably earlier. At 24 Broadway in 1861. It was demolished in the late 1860s for the building of St James’ Park station, opened in 1868.
[The two earliest newspaper references I have found, in 1803 and 1807, refer simply to the “Star and Crown” without adjective. One might suspect that this was because the New S&C was still called the Black Boy, so that these refer to the Old S&C. However, the 1807 reference, to the sale of the leasehold, refers to the Star and Crown, Southside, Broadway. If this is accurate, it must be the New S&C, as the Old S&C was on the north side of Broadway. Unfortunately, the WCARG does not say when the name change occurred. I thus cannot allocate these references with confidence to the correct pub at present – pity, as the 1803 one names a landlord, a Mr Arnold.] *

From family history research, I believe these were two brothers, George & Anthony Charles Riminton, born Lincolnshire, Woolsthorpe, sons of Charles & Sarah. (Surname commonly misspelt!) ***

George, baptised 7 Feb 1830, was formerly a butler. He died 29 Dec 1864 (pub given as address in probate record), so he is presumably the 'unnamed tenant' from whom the licence was transferred to Anthony. In 1861, Anthony (baptised 4 Jun 1826) was a laundry proprietor in Hammersmith; in 1865 a fishmonger living at Victoria Cottage, Kensal New Town. ***

I am looking for another Riminton: Henry, referred to as a Hammersmith hotelier in 1857 & listed as (Rimmington) publican in 1861, lodger at 12 Cedar Road Fulham. ***
