Kings Head, 1 James Street, St Margaret, Westminster

Westminster St Margaret index

In the Morgans 1682 Map of London in James Street and Petty France are isted '229 Red Lion Inne' and '233 Kings Head Inne'.

In the Morgans 1682 Map of London in James Street and Petty France are isted '229 Red Lion Inne' and '233 Kings Head Inne'. This would have been at about where William street joined at about number 41.

In 1851 it is listed as 4 James Street, Buckingham Gate. At 4 James Street in 1871 and earlier (apart from 1861 census when it is at 60 York Street), at 75 Buckingham Gate in 1901 after street re-naming and 85 Buckingham Gate in 1921 and later
This pub was on the east side of James Street (today’s Buckingham Gate), just north of the junction with York Street (today’s Petty France). It seems to have survived until the 1970s, when it was referred to as a music venue, but the site today is occupied by an office block. On Stow’s map of 1720, a Kings Head Inn is marked on the west side of James Street, opposite the 19th Century site, but whether it was a different establishment, or whether it was rebuilt at some time on the east side, I do not know. *
