Anchor & Crown, 9 King Street, St Margaret, Westminster

Westminster St Margaret pub history index

This pub was on the west side of King Street at its northern end from at least 1743. By the mid 1850s it occupied Nos 8 and 9, and in 1856 the magistrates licensed a new pub, the British Tavern, next door at No 7. This so excited the landlord, Mr Garwood, who already had competition from the Coach and Horses two doors away on the other side, that he had a fit from which he died. In 1858 the northern section of King Street and the north side of Crown Street were demolished under the Downing Street, Public Offices extension act, 1855. Thomas Rourke, who had married Mr Garwood’s widow and taken over the license, applied to transfer it to a property (20 & 21) on the south side of Crown Street, which he had taken on a 60-year lease, and which was not scheduled for demolition. (Information from The Era of 15th Aug 1858). He was either naïve or extremely calculating – he sold the property at auction a year later, with no mention of demolition, but it was, in fact, demolished in 1861 or 1862. This time, it seems the license was not transferred elsewhere *
