Paviors Arms, 42 Johnson Street, St John, Westminster

At 42 Johnson Street from 1871 onwards, due to a re-numbering in the 1860s. Unusually, almost every Census record names the pub. There was until recently a pub of this name in an office block called Neville House on Page Street, not far from the site of Johnson Street (which no longer exists), but I do not know if there was any continuous connection. The office block and the pub within it were closed and demolished in 2003. *

20 November 1829/Queen Square - A new information against Licensed Victuallers - A case of considerable importance to Licensed Victuallers was heard yesterday, before Mr Gregorie. It was an information against Mr James Burgess, for selling ale, he not being duly licensed to do so.
Rawlings, the Informer, stated that he went to the Paviours Arms, Johnson street, Horseferry road, and called for a glass of ale, which was served to him by a female. He had been served both before and since by the defendant, she acted in every respect as master of the house. The name of "Catherine Bowra, licensed dealer etc", was over the door, but on inquiring of the defendants wife what had become of her, she said that Mrs Bowra left the house about six weeks before, and they did not know where to find her - This was the whole of the Informer's evidence.
Mr Shuter, a solicitor of Millbank street, who attended for the defendant, said, that the house was licensed to Catherine Bowra, who was unavoidably absent from town, but during her absence she had appointed the defendant to manage her business. If such an information as this, he observed, was to be sustained, the very first taverns in the City - in fact the whole body of Licensed Victuallers would be liable to informations whenever they left London for a few weeks. There was no fraud in the present case, as the defendant was selling in a licensed house, and for a person duly licensed.
Mr Gregorie observed, that the case was one of a most important nature to publicans, and he should therefore defer giving judgment until next week./Morning Chronicle **
