Hand in Hand, 3 Moreton Street, St John, Westminster

At 43 Chapter Street before 1891, presumably road renaming. [Moreton Street and Chapter Street form a single line crossing over Vauxhall Bridge Road. Today, Chapter Street is to the North and Moreton Street to the south of the crossing, but according to older maps, this was not always the case. On Greenwoods map of 1827, there is very little development south of Vauxhall Bridge Road, and the whole street would appear to be Chapter Street, as far as Garden Street. On Stanford (1862), Chapter Street certainly crosses the Vauxhall Bridge Road, but becomes Moreton Street beyond Garden Street. On the OS map surveyed in 1869, the junction is uncertain, but it is certainly south of Vauxhall Bridge Road. A PH is marked at the corner of Garden Street, in the no-mans-land region. Stanford (1897) seems clear that the dividing point is Vauxhall Bridge Road, but Bartholomew (1908) pushes it back again, even beyond Garden Street! *
