This Coach and Horses pub began in Flood Street, which was demolished in the late 1840s when Victoria Street was built. Before the demolition, the licensee, Henry Scott, transferred the license on 1st Aug 1848 to a new house with the same name at 3 Dean Street. The 1851 Census does not name the pub, but Mr Aggleton, who transferred the license in 1858, was at 24 Dean Street. The 1861 Census gives an illegible pub name at 4 Dean Street. Some time in the early 1860s, Dean Street was incorporated into Great Smith Street. By 1871, the unnamed house at 2 Great Smith Street has lost its license and become a Beer House, which it remained in 1881 under Uriah Scarlett, although it was again named as the “Coach and Horses”. In 1891, Mr Scarlett is still at 2 Great Smith Street, but working as a carpenter, while is wife is now a licensed victualler, but whether at this address I cannot say, and no pub name is given. *
