1811/Thomas Almond, White Horse, Rupert street/../../Holdens Directory

William Goddard become tenant in Christmas 1811 on a tenancy of 42 years. This William is I think one of my ancestors, except that I have found other records which confirm that he was a wheelwright trading in Rupert Street until his death in 1841, when his son Charles took over the business. However I cannot find any confirmation that William at any time ran the White Horse. *

The Westminster Rate books for the period show that William's brother in law Charles Freake (William was married to Frances Elizabeth Freake) was the tenant from 1818 to 1822 as he was recorded in the rate books for these years. In fact I think he might have been the publican before 1818 as in 1816 on the baptism of one of his daughters he was recorded as a publican living in Rupert Street. *

While looking into Charles Freake I have found various references to the fact he was a publican at Royal Oak  in Elizabeth Street, his son Charles James became a well known architect & builder
