This pub was present by 1738 and closed in 1865. It is mentioned in Charles Dickens "Great Expectations". An 1850 watercolour of this pub by Thomas Hosmer Shepherd is held in the collections of the Guildhall Library. The 1856 directory lists a Cross keys Shades, and also a Cross keys Inn & Hotel.
