Ladd lane in 1682 Morgans map listed as 441 Swan with Two Necks Inn. And in Wood street are listed 437 Coach & Horses Inne ; 438 Castle Inne ; and 448 Cross keys Inne.
The Swan Inn, Lad Lane in the 1746 Rocques map. Also clearly marked are the Bell Inn, the White horse Inn, the Castle Inn, and the Cross keys Inn; all in Wood street.
This pub was present by 1738 and closed in 1865. It is mentioned in Charles Dickens "Great Expectations". An 1850 watercolour of this pub by Thomas Hosmer Shepherd is held in the collections of the Guildhall Library. The 1856 directory lists a Cross keys Shades, and also a Cross keys Inn & Hotel.
