Morning Advertiser 22 March 1852 - Aplications for New Licenses. :
House at the corner of Grange road and Hampstead road. Thomas Sadler applied for a lease for this house, and his petition was signed by 219 persons, and the application was recommended by 84 clerks and others in the service of the railway company. In opposition, there was a petition from Frederoock Bishop, of the New Hawley Arms, Grange road, and 168 inhabitants.
Mr Bishop was formerly tenant to Messrs Calvert and Co, of a house known as the Hawley Arms. In 1846 the East and West India Docks and Birmingham Junction Railway Company was established, and in 1849 notice was given to Messrs Calvert that the company wanted a portion of the land upon which the Hawley Arms stood, and afterwards notice was given that they should require another protion of land.
Proceedings in the Chancery stating that the land was required for the purpose of placing upon it the buttress of a bridge, and that they had no intention of building a public house.
Messrs Calvert were thus compelled to part with their ground, and the Hawley Arms havinfgbeen pulled down, and the tenant turned out, they built the New Hawley Arms upon the land that they still held, and for this house Mr Bishop obtained a licence last March. In the sum awarded for the Hawley Arms, all consideration for the licence was expressly omitted, and nothing had ever, in fact, been paid for this licence. The railway company also built the house for which a licence was now asked, on a piece of land, which they had taken from Messrs Calvert. This was contrary to good faith, and the licence should not be granted.
It was contended that Messrs Calvert had been paid a large sum of money for their interest in the property, and in addition, Mr Bishop had recieved £1100 which included the value of the licence.
The magistrates, without reference to the disputes between the railway company and Messrs Calvert were of the opinion that a licence should not be granted.
