At the 1911 census, Thomas James Woodhams is a Barman living at 12 Fair Street, Mile End with his new wife, Margaret and young son Robert Thomas of 7 months of age. His father , also Thomas, ran the Jolly Gardeners at Northfleet.  Thomas was called up for the First World War and was gassed and injured at Cambrai in December 1917 and died a few days later. He is buried at Etaples in France. His widow Madge (Margaret) - continued to run the pub until it was destroyed in the Blitz. **
