The publican in 1817 was one John Hyde, and wife Martha, who died aged 39, of liver disease. Their son, also John, born in 1817 became a soldier, and was in the Crimea. What became of John senior, I know not, but John junior ended as a Chelsea pensioner, and finally found himself a wife, in his twilight years! Ah!
John senior was born in Eton, in the 1790s, and what took him to London, nor led him to become a publican, I have no idea. His address is given as 40 Queen's Street on his son's baptismal details, I can now feel assured that this was indeed the pub where he worked. ***
