St Katherine Coleman index
Unless I am entirely mistaken, this is the Magpie & Punchbowl, 67 Fenchurch street in the early 1800s. A Shepherd & Neame pub in 2017, and open since at least 1784
A listing of historical London public houses, Taverns, Inns, Beer Houses and Hotels in St Katherine Coleman Street parish, City of London.
The current building dates from 1829. In March 1926 showing St Katherine Coleman church shortly before its demolition. The pub is on the left, its name is partially missing, but ends ''.....AY STORES'.
The East India Arms, 67 Fenchurch street, in 1956, the ground floor of the pub has been newly rebuilt.
The pub sign of the East India Company Arms, circa 1980.
The East India Company (1600-1874) held a monopoly on trade east of Cape Horn. They governed India, South East Asia and parts of China. At its peak it had its own private army of 260,000 soldiers, twice the size of the British army at that time. After the Indian Mutiny of 1857, Britain established direct rule of the company's empire in the east, effectively nationalising it. There was an barracks of the East India Company at Warley, in Essex.
