The East India Company (1600-1874) held a monopoly on trade east of Cape Horn. They governed India, South East Asia and parts of China. At its peak it had its own private army of 260,000 soldiers, twice the size of the British army at that time. After the Indian Mutiny of 1857, Britain established direct rule of the company's empire in the east, effectively nationalising it. There was an barracks of the East India Company at Warley, in Essex.
