My great grandfather, Mark Isaacs, born 1818 in Walworth, was the proprietor
or lessee in at least 1883 and 1884. I have seen records that indicate that
his first wife Rachel died at the Tavern on 29th April, 1882. He went on in
1886 to mary a second wife, who was 43 years younger than him, Sarah Bates,
a servant girl in a big house in Islington. In the 1881 census he is a
confectioner living in Cheetham, in Lancashire; and the later census see him
living in the Rothschilds buildings in Spitalfields with his new, and young
family. ***
