St Giles pub history index

A listing of historical public houses, Taverns, Inns, Beer Houses and Hotels in St Giles in Fields, London.

As far as I am aware, my ancestor Edward Hedges was the landlord of this pub around 1820 - 1830s. He was also a Beadle and was one of the first to join the Metropolitan Police in 1829. Needless to say he was dismissed from the police service for being drunk on duty. He is mentioned in Old Bailey court transcripts. *

Morning Advertiser 28 January 1823
Mr Edward Hedges, landlord of the White Hart, in the Coal-yard, Drury lane, was charged with having a number of persons drinking in his house, at two o'clock on Sunday morning - this case met with the same fate as the others - the information was dismissed.

Morning Post 29 November 1833
Hicks v Toon:
The plaintiff, a brewer at Pimlico, sought to recover £3 10s for ale sold to the Defendant, who keeps the White Hart in the Coal-yard, Drury lane.
The defence was that the ale was not ordered by the Defendant, but by a brewer named Aston, with who,m he had been in the habit of dealing, and who received the money for it. Aston's receipt was produced, but it appeared the Defendant had been not told to pay Aston, who was insolvent.
The Jury found a verdict for the Paintiff.
