Bloomsbury Tavern / Black Lion, 236 Shaftesbury Avenue, London WC2H 8EG

St George Bloomsbury pub index

The earliest address appears to be at Oxford Street according to the 1861 and 1865 license transfers; but this is not entirely correct. The address until about 1890 is at 7 Thorney Street; as it also is in 1848  and 1856 directories; and prior to this, in 1843 for example, is at 4 Castle street, Museum street. This all changes when Shaftesbury Avenue is built, and is numbered to 226 Shaftesbury Avenue only, which is at the junction with New Oxford street. Up until at least 1901 this is the Black Lion.

By 1905, the road numbering changes slightly, and the address is now at 236 Shaftesbury Avenue. It is no longer called the Black Lion, but listed as a wine merchants. Today (2018) it is the Bloomsbury Tavern, a Shepherd & Neame pub.
