A distant relative, Joseph Mussel Croom (1782-1838), had the lease on the
hotel for some 30 years or so in the period 1810-1840. After his death the
executors of his estate advertised the lease for sale (London Times 24th
June 1840). The hotel at that time had ‘44 beds, eight sitting rooms, a
large noble dining room and offices of every description’. The income from
the hotel was said to have been between £5000 and £6000 per annum – about
£500,000 in today’s money. *
The hotel was eventually demolished in 1882 exposing the remains of the old
White Friars Monastery that had previously occupied the site. An article in
Bell's Life in London and Sporting Chronicle(London, England),Saturday,
December 23, 1882; pg. 7 gives an interesting insight into the history of
the hotel. *
