Sporting Life. 25 May 1898 - Funeral of Charley Bates
Yesterday were laid to rest the mortal remains of the once popular Charley Bates. Most sportsmen of the present day will remember Charley as "one of the best", in fact, his connection with Jem Smith and Toff Wall, the latter especially, will be fresh in our readers memory.
Charley as a sportsman properly started at the Spread Eagle, Kingsland road, of which establishment he afterwards became the "boss". Then he "took" the White Swan, Salisbury court, Fleet street, and after some vicissitudes of fortune he went on to the Sussex Arms, at the corner of St Martins lane and Long Acre, and then on to what turned out to be Charleys last place of business, the Lamb and Flag, High street, Homerton, the "boss" of which, George Archer, took particular care to see that his old pal was provided for.
He put Charley into the management of the Lamb and Flag, exactly twelve years ago yesterday, the day of the funeral. Charley Bates will be remembered by many sportsmen, but particularly by those connected with boxing and skittles, and it was a matter of surprise to many to notice that boxers whom Charley had materially helped to obtain their position of champion were absent. Amongst others were :- Harry Davenport, Tom Atkinson, Bill Mortimer, Barney Scammell, Sam and Jem Lea, Fred Johnson, Tom Ashwick, Ted and Harry Gobby, Harry Weston, Johnny and Ted Harris, Miss Alice Lloyd, and her relations, Johnny Wood, Tim Scully, T Andrews, Fred Holmes, George Parker, H Schonberg, W Stokes, Jim Pedler, W Mellis, F Martin, A Harrington, R Braggart, Billy Mortimer, W Hinckley, W Hunbury, Bissell, Reed.
The coffin, a mammoth one of polished oak, with brass fittings, bore the inscription :- "Charles William Bates, Died May 19, 1898 aged 39".

Sidney G Bryant, Public House Manager, born 22 Oct 1908
Eva I Bryant, Public House Manageress, born 08 Oct 1909
My grandmother, Mrs Dorothy Perham ran The Albion public house/hotel at 2-3 New Bridge Street, London with her partner Mr Harold Osborn. I do not have exact dates as they ran a total of three public houses during 1942 -1951 but it would be during this time frame. *
I know of one other possible pub they managed as in 1945 I have them at 13 Salisbury Court which I believe to be The White Swan. They also managed one in Soho but I do not know the name but understand that this was in the late 1940’s. *
Streatham News. 27 February 1959
Mr George Gunner is remembered as the manager of the White Lion, Streatham High road.
At 62, Mr Gunner died last week in hospital after a sudden illness.
He left the White Lion in 1955 after 5 years and took over the White Swan, Salisbury court, Fleet street where he made many friends among journalists and advertising men.
Mr and Mrs Gunner came to Streatham in 1926 and lived in Kirkstall Gardens until 1950, when he was offered the managership of the White Lion.
Mr Gunner had only been in the trade for 11 years. Before that he worked for film companies and had 21 years with Warner Brothers, rising from office boy to office manager, and then circuit manager.
As a private in Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry in the first world war he was taken prisoner in France. Hard work in bad conditions in a salt mine affected his health and he b=never completely recovered.
