In November 1845, the King's Arms Inn and Hotel in Leadenhall Street, was purchased by the Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O) for £7250. ***
A new building was designed and bult by Mr Beachcroft; (cost £8000). In March 1848; P&O moved into the new offices at 122 Leadenhall St.
It was the extension of this building that led to the rebuilding of The Ship & Turtle in 1887, and the demolition of the Hercules c1920.

By matching this 1840 Tallis Directory and the 1841 Census, I have been able to confirm that Edward Vernon and Mary Ann Phillips were definitely at The
Kings Arms in 1841. It is at 122 Leadenhall Street. Mary Ann Phillips, the housekeeper (and who was nee Wright) married Edward Vernon in 1843. **
