I am still on the hunt for my ancestor Paul Rider and have searched the victualler licence records.
I have him listed as publican from 1818 -1827 at the corner of Gainsford Street and Thomas Street. I had been told that this pub was THE GRAPES but that may be a name given to it later because Paul is listed at that address but the pub is actually called SHIPS IN DISTRESS.
The person who continually stood surity for Paul Rider was Evan Owan of the Rose and Crown at Shad Thames. This is not the same Rose and Crown that Paul was later Publican of at 113 Long Lane Bermondsey.
My ancestor, Paul Rider [Ryder], is listed as publican of The Grapes, Gainsford Street Horsleydown in 1828. Between 1836 -1941 he is listed as publican of The Rose and Crown ,Long Lane, Bermondsey. He moved to Stockton Durham in 1841 [before the census] and died there in 1843. On his death certificate he is given as a licensed victualler. His wife Sarah is listed in Wear Street Sunderland 1851 census as a publican **
