March 1823/Sarah Phillips, Wheatsheaf, Lombard street/../../Victuallers Recognizance

Many years ago I visited the local studies library in Southwark in search of my great great grandfather’s connections here as family hand down suggested he ran a pub in 1824 in a street close to where Dickens as a 12 year old lodged (Lant Street) at the same time. **

The quarter sessions records for the Licensed Victuallers Recognizances (ref QS 5/10/4&5) for 1823/4 showed following which I recorded; Wheatsheaf Public House, Lombard Street, St George -
14 Oct 1823 Stephen Sommers. Recognizance by John Kelly of Lombard Street, victualler. (Kelly is shown in same year as Licensee of the Old George, Southwark, and Stephen Sommers did the recognizance for Kelly).
19 Oct 1824 - again Stephen Sommers with recognizance by Joseph Barton, broker of Mint Street, St George. **

The following year my ancestor is no longer licensee (he died in 1829 in Paddington) and after 1827 the pub seems to have disappeared as a licensed establishment. Indeed Lombard Street no longer exists so perhaps the Street was demolished around that time.
As an aside, Stephen’s son, my great grandfather and another Stephen, ran the Bush Tap pub in South Street, Farnham, Surrey, in the 1870’s. You have this recorded. Later he ran the Station Hotel in Liss, Hampshire in the early 1880’s. **
