Prince, 23 Lant Street, Southwark St George Martyr, SE1

Southwark St George Martyr index

Known later as the Prince of Wales and demolished in 2005. Replaced with flats, possibly at the junction with Weller Street, east side. ***

The 1920 photo is of The Prince of Wales, 23 Lant Street at the corner of Weller Street (formerly Little Lant Street). Also in this photo, four doors along, with a rendered front is the former Crown, at 31 Lant Street.
Gangland enforcer, and associate of the Kray brothers, Freddie Foreman was the landlord here in the 1960s. The body of Jack "The Hat" Mc Vitie (murdered by Reggie Kray) was dumped, in his own car, outside this pub on the night of 29.10.1967 by Chris Lambrianou. Foreman was told by the Krays to get rid of it and duly disposed of the body from a trawler off Newhaven. He was sentenced to 10 years for this offence. **
