Southwark St George Martyr index
The Oxford Arms existed in Oxford Place, now part of Westminster Bridge Road,
since at least 1809. Samuel Baker the landlord in 1846 was described as a
publican, civil engineer, well borer etc. It was a Barclay Perkins,
later a Courage's pub, and was renamed by 1994 the Flower of the Forest and
was still there at the corner of Dodson Street (April 2009), mostly selling
Guinness to the builders next door.
This, and the original Flower of the
Forest, were about fifty to sixty yards apart on the edges of St.
George's Circus, this is the one at Westminster Bridge Road next to the
flats. ***

Mary Ann Bill is the publican in 1839. She was my 3 x Great Grandmother. She
must have taken over the pub when her husband Stephen William Bill died in
1835. I believe he was there a few years before. The reference to the pub
and his death can be found on the London, England Deaths and Burials. Prior
to this Stephen was a wine merchant in the Fleet Market.
