Southwark St George Martyr index
The Equestrian Tavern, 124 Blackfriars Road was the Magdalene Coffee House 1775-1825 and the Equestrian Coffee House in 1825, it was rebuilt as part of the Surrey Vaudeville Theatre, both were destroyed by enemy action on 10 May 1941, and at least 18 fireman were killed in this incident. ***
The address is given in Sun Fire Office insurance records as St Georges Road, an older name for the street. It is also named as the Equestrian Coffee House in those records, so the name change may have been earlier. In fact, the Magdalen Coffee House is mentioned in a 1797 Sun Fire Office record as being at the end of Dover Street (later Little Surrey Street, now Davidge Street), so closer to the intersection with Friar Street (modern Webber Street), on the other side of Blackfriars Road, opposite the site of the Magdalen Hospital. This means it may have been one of the establishments later at 152 Blackfriars Road or 152 1/2 Blackfriars Road. *
