Sportsman, 47 Whiston Street, Shoreditch E2

In 1869 and earlier, the Sportsman is listed as 45 Margaret Street, Gloucester Street, Hackney Fields - comparing maps, this is the same address as Whiston Street - see in 1865. To add confusion, the 1871 address is 6 Nichols Street. The address is at 181 Whiston Road by 1940, following street renaming. *

Great Grandad, John Joseph Keeler, was born at 1 Heneage Street on the 7th May 1850 and we have his original certificate of the birth being recorded in the District of Mile End New Town, County of Middlesex on the 15th May. Also his Baptism Certificate dated 27th May 1850 from the Parish of Christ Church, County of Middlesex. Both documents refer to his father James as being a Licensed Victualler.

James was born in 1811 but his father was described as a Weaver on the Marriage Certificate of James to Sarah in 1844. At that time James was also described as a Weaver living in Angel Court.

They went on to have son James (born 1845); Sarah (born 1846) by this time James was recorded as the Licensed Victualler of The Sportsman, Margaret Street, Haggerston, Middlesex; Joseph (born 1847) 45 Margaret St, Haggerston; however unfortunately poor Joseph died on the 11th July 1850 of Whooping Cough but they seem to have moved to 1 Heneage Street, where James is still described as Licensed Victualler; by then John had been born. This is the Osborne Arms ***

My father in law always said that the Keelers were Hugenots who came over from France and were Silk Weavers and I have found evidence that a lot of them certainly were in that industry. ***
