My dad, William Alfred Carter, used to live at 13 Arline Street, next door to the Forester. He remembered climbing in the window of his home which you can see here next to the pub. His dad used to be in there most nights apparently!
Dad was evacuated to Islip in Oxfordshire, separated from his siblings Harry, Jim and Joan. Leaving behind Kitty (Kathleen) who was 16, and twin babies with his mother Eliza and Dad Henry (Harry). They were all killed in the Blitz on 11th May 1941. ***
The pub, which stood on the corner of Arline Street and Diss Street, was bombed during the war and, I think, destroyed. Cecil Jeffrey Francis was still the publican at the time but he and his family came out unscathed. His mother was running the Duke of Sussex, in Goldsmiths Row, Shoreditch **
