The Halfway House, Blue Anchor Road in 1848 & 1851. The Halfway House, 229 Rotherhithe New Road at the junction with Jarrow Road. As may be seen, this is directly beneath the main line rail tracks. Previously the ‘Railway Tavern’. There has been a pub at this location for many years, long before the railroad was built. The original pub was demolished but the powers that be or owners at the time, insisted it was replaced in the same location, hence within one of the arches. New one opened in 1835 and closed in 1967. When you look at the image you can see just how close the bedroom ceilings were to the tracks above, it’s a wonder how anyone could sleep with the noise and vibrations from the trains. Seems that in 1835 builders got their own back on the owners. *
