Old Ship, 17 Barnes street, Limehouse, E14

The address is now given as 17 Barnes street, but was formerly confusingly similar to that of the Queens Head - the two pubs actually face each other across a square. **
On all the census summaries from 1841 to 1891 the address given by the enumerators was 9 York street West. The properties in York Street West were originally numbered consecutively starting from the Commercial Road. The properties on York Street East were also numbered consecutively starting at the Commercial Road and in fact still are. The Queens Head is 8 York street East and has been on all census summaries from 1840 through to today. The two pubs are diagonally opposed to each other across York Square.
Returning to York Street West for a moment to conclude. On the 1901 census the Ship public house is given the number 17. On the previous census in 1891 the ship was still number nine as it had been since at least since 1840. This was because all the property were originally numbered consecutively as previously mentioned. So, the house numbers were changed from being numbered consecutively starting on the left hand side (i.e. the west side of the street) and working their way around the street, to being numbered alternately. Odd numbers on left side of street (i.e the west side). With the even numbers on the east side of the street. This change took place between 1891 and 1901. *
