Several members of my family were Licensed victuallers :
James Dobbin and his wife Ann;
James Dobbin and family are licensees at the Chatsworth Arms, 27 Chatsworth road, Stratford in 1881; and by 1889 at the Olive Branch, Marylebone alongside their son in law, Percy Twitchin, and family.
their son Walter Dobbin and his wife Louisa;
On July 23rd, 1894, at St Mary Lambeth, Walter James Dobbin, a clerk aged 23 marries Caroline Louisa Daniels, aged 20. His father is James Dobbin, publican, and both list their address as at 11 Dorset road. Signed in the presence of Thomas Daniels, father and Percy Twitchin.
In October 1895 (born 10th September), their son, Walter Sidney Dobbins is baptised at St Mary the Virgin, Tottenham. Their address is listed as the Ship, High road, Tottenham.
By 1898, Walter Dobbin is listed in the electoral register at 246 Woolwich road, which is the Roupell Arms, Charlton. The Kings Arms Woolwich was being run by Walter Dobbin on the 1901 census. In 1904 and 1906, the electoral register places him at the Nelsons Arms, High street, in Merton; then later in 1911 census he is managing the British Queen in Wimbledon.
Their son-in-law Percy H Twitchin;
Percy Herbert Twitchin was a bar lad at his uncles pub; the Hand in Hand, Streatham Hill in the 1881 census (his uncle was Henry W Martin).
On the 2nd November 1888 in Lambeth, Percy Herbert Benoni Twitchin married Annie Edith Dobbin.
He later worked with his father in law, James Dobbin, at the Olive Branch, 120 Earl street, Lisson grove in Marylebone around 1891. In 1893, the baptism of his daughter, Olive Edith Twitchin and son Harold Twitchin, at St Mary, Bryanstone square notes him as a Licensed victualler with address of 62 Wigmore street; which would be the Cock & Lion. Then on the 1901 census he runs the Tiger at 18 Camberwell Green.
In 1906, the electoral register places him at the Castle Hotel, Whittaker Avenue, Hill street, Richmond; and in 1907 at the Imperial, Lower George street.
his brother Harry Dobbin senior and Harry junior;
Harry Dobbin is the proprietor of the White Swan, 79 Norwood hill, in at least 1901 and 1911. There is also an Harry Dobbin at the White Hart, Holborn at this time.
and finally another brother-in-law James Bartlett was a wine vault keeper in Camberwell. *
