My ancestors leased "The Black Dog" pub from Huggins Brewery from 1824 to 1842. In 1829 my great great great grandfather, John MOORE's first wife died at this address.  *

My great great grandfather, George Longman MOORE was born in 14th September 1841 on Vauxhall Road (at number 102 according to his birth certificate). *

The following year, in 1842 on Christmas Day, John MOORE leased "The Duke of York" at 1, Upper York Place for 75 rent per annum [equivalent to 5,152 today]. The mortgage was 1,800 [123,660 at today's value]. They stayed there until 1858 when they sold it for 3,500 [240,460 in today's money] when he was 76 yrs old. He died at the age of 89. *

The son born in Vauxhall, George Longman MOORE, started as an apprentice goldsmith, but sometime after he turned 30, he took up his father's line of work. He ran/owned? pubs in New Cross (lived at 102 Amersham Vale), then at the Worlds End, 95 Newington Causeway, Newington. After that they ran "The Albion" at 155 Commercial Road, Peckham, and finally "The Lord Raglan" at 199 Shernall Street, Walthamstow. *

When George died at just 58, in February 1899, his son George Herbert Debac "Bert" MOORE took over "The Lord Raglan" and wound up marrying the barmaid Phoebe REVETT. *
