James Thornton had a pub in Barnes (Land Tax Records) 1827-1830 and is shown as ‘Publican’ in High Street Barnes in the 1841 Census (Bulls Head). James died in 1855, with 5 leasehold houses to leave to his children. In the 1851 Census, James Thornton is shown as licensed victualler at the Arab Boy, in Putney. *

James’ brother George Thornton had the ‘Two Brewers’ in Mortlake in 1841 (Census records), but had retired by 1851, when the pub was being run by Thomas William Thornton, George’s nephew. George died in 1862 whilst living at the ‘Devonshire Arms’, Kensington when it was being run by Alfred Howse – yet another of my distant relatives!! *
