My great grandfather Mark Rouse (1840-1898) was the publican at "Ye Olde Leather Bottle" for perhaps 2 to 3 years. He died 27th November 1898 following an accident in a pony & trap. The vehicle collided with another vehicle & he was thrown to the ground, injuring his lung. He died after a couple of weeks. ***

The Coroners report is written up in the Wimbledon News. He had been a draper in the Borough Street area near the Elephant & Castle for perhaps close to 40 years & “retired” to a short-lived life at the pub. ***
