This pub was established by 1807 and rebuilt in its present form in 1910; in 1869 and earlier, it is listed as at 15 Circus Street, Marylebone road, and then at both addresses in 1884. It is now called the Temperance (2008).  ** Renamed The Royal Oak in July 2014. ***

In 1810, Circus Street, Cumberland Place, New Road, Marylebone, is the first on the Right east from the turnpike, by the Yorkshire Stingo, extending to York Street (John Lockie, 1810). [Adam street is further south, with eastern sections and western sections. These later had the Carpenters Arms and the Manchester Arms.]

In 1808, an Walter Tomes, is victualler, at 7 Adam street West (the Carpenters Arms). ] *+

The 1841 census lists James Tilling, aged 40, Licensed Victualler and his wife, Sarah Tilling, also aged 40; along with children, Thomas Tilling 15, Robert Tilling 14, Hannah Tilling 11, Edward Tilling 7, and Hester Tilling 4; and four servants. i.e. Thomas Edwards, aged 25, George Warrick is 15; Mary Wait is 40 and Elizabeth Gardner is aged 45. *+

James Tilling has previously been a dairyman, working from 1834, in Circus street; and he is still listed at the Royal Oak in the 1843 directory, but leaves to run a a farm in Hendon about this time, and possibly due a case of death threats (read the blog). *+

In July 1844, the landlord is Edward Hodges when his wife has triplet boys. By 1846, he is announced bankrupt; although later he is at the Canonbury Tavern in Islington in January 1848. *+

William Bathe, like two of his brothers, became a publican. He  was baptised at Purton on 27 January 1820. His first entry into the licensed trade was when he was apprenticed to a vintner, Charles Bleaden, on 8 October 1834, when he was 14 years old. The London Tavern may be a major clue to this. It is possible that William Bathe was as a servant at the Carpenters Arms, in Kingsland Road, Shoreditch in the 1841 census. *+
