My 2x great grandfather Richard Hill was running the Laurie Arms with his wife at 1 Shouldham Street Marylebone on the 1841 English Census. (He had arrived in London early 1839 from Ranskill in Nottinghamshire where had run the Bell Inn between about 1834 and 1838.) ***

He died at the pub on the 10 Feb 1843. His wife, Sarah, took over the Castle Pub at 26 Castle street now Furnival street in Oct 1843. She married William Robson in December 1844 and they ran that pub together until William’s death in 12th of June 1854 and Sarah remained on paying rent for that address until 1860 when a Mr. Woodcock took over.
The grub must have been good at the Laurie Arms and the Castle when Sarah was there because in her younger years she had been head-cook for William George Monckton-Arundell, 5th Viscount Galway at his residence Serlby Hall in Nottinghamshire! ***

I believe I have found the manager of the Laurie Arms on the 1911 Census. **+

William Joseph Alabaster and his wife, Amelia Elizabeth Alabaster (nee Gilbert) are listed as being manager and manageress in the licensed victualler trade of the Laurie Arms on the 1911 Census. Their niece, Florence Brooks, is a barmaid; there is a cook and three barmen. William was also listed as a 'manager' on his marriage certificate and they are at the Kings Head, 176 Warwick Street in the 1901 Census and until about 1910. **+

According to the British Phone Book, Mr William J Alabaster was at The Rose & Crown in 1927. Unfortunately that was the year he died. **+

His widow, Amelia Elizabeth Alabaster is listed at The Rose & Crown, 203 Hammersmith Road in the London Electoral Registers for at least 1919 (with her husband, of course), in 1928 (with William Lambert), and in 1930 (with Frederick John & Victoria Ellen Abbott, Ada Pearson and Frances Woolf) and by 1932 (with Ada Pearson and Frances Woolf). **+
