Marylebone index

This pub was rebuilt in around 1900 and is also known as ‘Crocker’s Folly’ after early landlord Frank Crocker. It is a Grade II* building, but closed on 14 March 2004 and has an uncertain future. ** Known as the Crockers Folly when it closed in 2004. This pub has been restored to its extraordinary Victorian splendour with the upper floors converted to residential use and reopened on 25th October 2014, still retaining the former name of the Crockers Folly though now largely a Lebanese restaurant and cocktail bar. ***

My father's sister, Ethel Barker, married Charles Durden. The pub was run by Ethel Durden, Charles Durden, Bernard Barker and Clarence Barker as a family concern. Clarence ran a large billiard hall in the pub. This was around 1924; and somewhere I have a picture of myself on the outside balcony with my grandmother.
Charles Durden later killed himself by jumping from the window on the corner, where the grand piano was (as opposed to Richard Tames' book, which says that Crocker did this - this is wrong, it was my uncle). Charles Durden was previously at the Lord Nelson, Old Kent Road shortly after being married, and probably at the Ship & Billet, in Greenwich by 1904. *
