My great grandfather, William Gent, ran the Three Mariners Public House, 34
Ropemakers Fields, Limehouse, from 1893-1900. William's father, Filby Gent,
was listed in the 1845, 1846 & 1848 directories as a beer retailer, living
at 11 St. Annes Place, Limehouse (Star of the
East). The 1851 Census gives him as a beer seller living at 26 St.
Anne's Place, Limehouse. I see on your site that Filby Gent also ran the
Bricklayers Arms, 34
Settles Street, Mile End in 1823; and the
Old Bailey online places him at 10 Duke Street, St Georges East in 1830. ***
William's daughter, Violet Gent (my grandmother), was living with her sister
and brother-in-law, Frederic Payne, at the
Ship beer house, 291
West Ferry Road, Millwall, in the 1901 Census. William Gent worked on the
construction of Tower Bridge and was injured in a fall from it. That's when
he took on the Mariners pub. ***
