My mother's grandfather, George Skillern, was a publican in South East
London at the turn of the last century. One of his pubs was
The Railway Bell in
Forest Hill, confirmed in 1905. George Skillern was born in 1854 so he was
already 51 in 1905, and he died in 1914 - perhaps he was the owner for only
a short time. He was also the owner of The Eight Bells, 15, Cavendish
Grove, Kennington, Lambeth for a period of time, as he owned it in the 1901
census. *
