Coronet, 280 Westminster Bridge Road, Lambeth SE1

Lambeth pub history index

This was called the Crown in 1860 and earlier, when it was numbered as 7 Bridge Street (or sometimes 7 1/2 Bridge Street as in 1856, or even 8 Bridge Street as in 1841). Bridge Street is the stretch of later Westminster Bridge Road between the bridge and the modern line of Belvedere Road, formerly Narrow Wall, and, confusingly, there was a number 7 on either side of the street (1-7 on the north, 7-13 on the south). It is possible that the Crown mentioned in 1860 and earlier was on the south side (and it is sometimes given as 7 1/2 Bridge Street or even 8 Bridge Street, which suggests this). The buildings on the south were pulled down in 1860, according to the Survey of London. *

In 1809 we have the Crown, Bridge street, Surrey side Westminster bridge, in Lambeth

The 1851 census enumeration notes that the Crown is on the Red Lion side of Bridge street, which is also demolished in 1860. Looking at the numbering fro the new section of Westminster Bridge road, formerly part of Bridge street, Lambeth confirms that this address was in the section of Bridge street which was not demolished. The Coronet, at 280 Westminster Bridge road was formerly an ironmongers, and the beer retailer at 276 Westminster Bridge road was previously a coffee house.

So the later Coronet at 280 Westminster Bridge Road was a slightly different site, but given the similarity in names, may at least have been intended as a successor to the earlier Crown, or a license transfer in the first instance. *
