Clayton Arms, 27 Kennington Oval, Lambeth SE11 - in 1924
The 1924 photo is of the English cricketer, Pelham Warner (1873-1963) on the pitch at The Oval. Over his left shoulder is the Clayton Arms, Kennington Oval at the corner of Clayton Street. On match days the pub offered a free view of the pitch from its upper floors and roof. It was demolished in 1933 during the building of the Kennington Park Estate. Lohmann House (after George Lohmann, English cricketer, 1865-1901) now stands on the site. *

The Cricketers, Kennington Oval, in the mid 1950's
A replacement pub, The Cricketers, was built on the opposite corner of Clayton Street, also in 1933. It was a famous music pub in the 1980s, later it was a Portuguese restaurant. It is currently closed and under threat of demolition. The third photo is this new pub, The Cricketers in the mid 1950's. The roof of this derelict pub has been recently used by fans to see into the ground during sold out matches. *
