Hatton Garden - Caution to Licensed Victuallers:
Richard Cubit, a man about 50 years of age, dressed in black of rather
shabby genteel appearance was brought up in the custody of William Read,
jun. and examined on the following charge.
The Prisoner went in about half past six on Wednesday evening to the parlour
at Mr Peter Wyllies, the sign of the Lamb in Fulwoods rents, Holborn, and
had a glass of ale, which he paid for on delivery, and in going away he put
the glass in his pocket, which Mrs Wyllie happened to observe; he left the
house immediately, and Mrs Wyllie related the circumstance to some persons
in the tap room, who pursued him and overtook him in crossing Holborn, and
brought him back when he was searched, and the glass was found in his
pocket, wrapped up in a pocket handkerchief.
Read jun stated to the Magistrates that he had information of several public
houses, eating houses and lodging houses robbed by a person answering the
description of the prisoner, of glass, table linen, curtains, bagatelle
balls, time pieces and other portable articles, and he made no doubt if the
prisoner was remanded for further examination, but many charges would be
brought against him.
The prisoner was remanded till Wednesday next.
