In earlier Census returns, Thomas Ayling was listed as as a Carpenter (1841), and later a "Carpenter and Beer Shop Keeper" (1851) living at 7 St Peter's Place. It is where the name 'Carpenter's Arms' comes from as he was a Carpenter before being a landlord. Customers would have a beer whilst waiting for their trade items. **

In the 1861 Census, my 4x Great-Grandfather) Thomas Ayling is listed as a Landlord ("Licenced Victualler") of "Carpenter's Arms Beer Shop" on Black Lion Lane. A Carpenters Arms still exists in this road. **
