Richard I, 52 & 54 Royal Hill, Greenwich SE10

Greenwich Index

The address is first listed at both 52 & 54 Royal Hill by 1923, prior to this 54 Royal Hill had been a confectioners since 1908. The very early address in 1881 is at 6 Royal Hill. *

Up to late 1970’s / early 1980’s; 54 Royal Hill operated as an Off-Licence, and 52 Royal Hill had been a sawdust strewn pub. The Tolly is the locals name for the Richard 1st.,  due to its history of selling Tolly Light Ale, which was stocked by the off-licence.

The Richard 1st was then refurbished to offer a Double fronted public house. 54 Royal Hill then became the public bar with 52 Royal Hill as the saloon bar.

In 2014, the Tolly is now a Young’s pub and is being refurbished again to knock the
two bars into one and to increase the restaurant facility. A great loss.   *
