At the Wheatsheaf, Fulham Road, are Mr and Mrs Hanbidge, who between them
have had a lot of experience of the various aspects of the Trade. Bill's
uncle held the licence of our Blue Lion in Grays Inn Road from 1901 to 1942,
and he himself often helped out there. Before the war he worked as a steward
on the P & O Line, mainly on the China and Australia runs, and at the
outbreak of war joined the RAF. Peace time found him managing the Rayners
Hotel at harrow and in April 1949 he took over the licence of the Wheatsheaf.
Meals are served in the attractive saloon bar and Mrs Hanbidge prepares many
luncheons each day. She has always taken an interest in catering and was in
charge of the Still Rooms at Grosvenor House Hotel when it opened before the
war. A wide variety of snacks are always available at the bar.
Mr Hanbidge has all kinds of people calling at the Wheatsheaf, young and
old. and in particular he encourages local painters, whose works can be seen
hanging in the bars. He doesn't find a lot of time for hobbies, but still
enjoys a game of golf and an occasional day at the races. He has held the
position of treasurer in the Fulham and South Kensington LVA for five years.
