Ship Defiance, from Alfred Dobson to Thomas Matthews

Application for transfer of the Ship Defiance, Grove street, Deptford, under the 14th section, to Mr Kettlewell, stating that in 1878, a lease was granted by Mr W J Evelyn to Mr THomas Matthews, to whom the Bench renewed the license in 1879.
It transpired that Mr Matthews, who was, and had been for 27 years in the employ of the Commercial Dock company, had quitted the house, and left it in possession of a manager. As soon as this came to the knowledge of Messrs Stansfield, the brewers, who had a lieu of £1000 upon the property, they took proceedings against Matthews, and in June last obtained judgment against him.
Matthews had yielded up possession, and the present applicant, Mr Kettlewell, had been put in by the brewers, as a tenant likely to satisfy the requirements of the Bench. The complaint was that no responsible person had been in charge of the house for nearly a year past, and that the so called manager was of objectionable character.
The Chairman said these were grave charges, and those whose duty it was to look after the property could not be held blameless. The manager was never a tenant, although in possession, and he was expelled as soon as possible after he was discovered.
The Chairman found it a bad case, and adjourned until 28th September, with no protection offered in carrying on the business until that day.
