Queens Arms, 53 Douglas way, Deptford SE8

Deptford Index

Douglas Street was a very new street in 1861. The first electoral roll for it is dated 1856 and there are maps dated 1857 and 1858 on which it does not yet appear. Today, of course, it no longer exists. In its place is a street called Douglas Way, a pedestrian-only street that is in two halves, either side of Margaret McMillan Park, named after Margaret McMillan (1860 - 1931), the American born Christian Socialist who worked extensively in deprived areas to improve the health care and education for the poor. The address changes to 53 Douglas Way between 1938 and 1944 through street renaming. * The Queens Arms closed in 1951.
