Dog & Bell, 116 Prince street, Deptford SE8

Deptford Index

At 96 Prince Street by 1891; and at 116 Prince Street by 1938; the Pubs is later known as the Dog & Bell **

Well, actually, the original name for the Royal Marine was the Dog & Bell, Dock Street, and from possibly as early as 1749, although the earliest recorded instance is in 1814 at the Old Bailey - Bill Elson. It is referred to in a sea shanty - 'Homeward Bound' which was printed in 1849 and sold until 1862. Also note that trade directory entries list it as the Dog & Bell until at least 1856. The renaming of the pub to the Royal Marine was by the then publican intent on capturing the "more respectable Marines" who were lodged in Deptford Dockyard as opposed to the more local ne'er do wells!! *

I tried to find a photo of the cobbles but no luck, I was sad when I heard they were gone, the earlier photographs show some of these.

One year we had a pankcakes race against the Navy Arms and it as so cold the cobbles were frozen and it was chaos. The Napolionic prisoners laid the cobbles when they were on the prison hulks and also in under ground tunnels in coveys wharf.

We also found in the attic a very large pub sign painted very professionally of a royal marine in a uniform of the 1790s. I presented it to the Royal Marines for their Mess. ***

1970's/'Lala' says that her parents ran the pub in the early 1970's - Rita and Reg Kearns. It was known locally as the Dog and Bell but was officially registered as Royal Marine. *

For the period between 1980 and 1983, my late parents Eric & Tensi (Mr Eric and Mrs Hortensia Wilson) were also Landlord/tenants of the Dog & Bell pub in Deptford with their well known dog 'Rebel'. My mum Tensi pretty much ran the pub single handed. Celebrity/musician Jools Holland was also a regular at the time, then in his early 20's used to frequent the pub for the great beer.
It was a Fullers Brewery pub then and my dad Eric also won the Fullers annual award for the best ESB real ale ??
They gave up the pub late 1983 and took over the Lord Napier on the Greenwich High Road which is no longer there.
