Cripplegate pub history index
Existed from at least 1811. The Hope and Anchor, Fore street in the 1850 license transfer. Aka Grapes at times in 1863 and earlier. The street directory is virtually non-existent by 1942. The 1941 directory notes it is next to Elephant yard, which would explain the Elephant Inn, earlier at 112 Fore street.

My 3x great grandmother, Amy (Anne) Bowgett was living here on the 1861
census when the head was Hannah Goodwin. She has been very hard to trace and
in 1864 there was a banns record for her and a William Norris (Morris) in
Little Marlow, where she was from. I have found a newspaper article in The
Morning Advertiser, 23/02/1863 talking about a transfer of licence between
Hannah Goodwin and a William Morris, who I believe is the same William that
was meant to marry Amy.
I can find nothing else about William Morris and the marriage never took place. *
