POLICEMAN'S TIME.
George BoIam, Of the Queen's Head, Great Bath-street, Clerkenwell, was
summoned at Clerkenwell: for keeping open his premises during prohibited
hours on November 29.
"Inspector Bastable said he saw a customer served in the defendant's house
at 12.37 a.m. He pointed to a timepiece in the house which indicated 12.45.
The defendant replied, "They are all Wrong...I will go to Holborn Town Hall
and put them right."
Cross-examined by Mr. Ricketts, who appeared for the defendant, the
inspector said he took the time from the watch of a police-sergeant who
accompanied him.
Why did you refuse to go with defendant to see the time?—Because I knew it.
Mr. –Ricketts: That's a woman's reason. (Laughter.)
Police-sergeant Austin gave corroborative evidence.
Mr. Ricketts: Is your watch always right?— Yes.
Do you ever forget to wind it up?—No.
Mr. Ricketts: You are a most extraordinary man. (Laughter.)
Did you compare your time with the Holborn Town Hall clock? — Yes, and it
agreed.
But isn't that clock often a quarter of an hour out? — I can't tell.
(laughter.)
Mr. Horace Smith: Do the Commissioners of Police recognise the Holborn Town
Hall clock as an authority? (Laughter.)
Mr. Ricketts said his client was in the habit. Keeping his clocks seven
minutes fast, This was the case of a young man charmed with the barmaid
lingering on. (Laughter.) He denied that the liquor was served after
half-past twelve. It was merely a Question of whose watch was correct, the
publican's or that of the police officer.
Mr Horace Smith gave the defendant the benefit of the doubt, and dismissed
the summons." ***
