25 July 1794/Insured: William Legge, the Crown, Essex Street Strand, victualler/../../Sun Fire Office records, held at London Metropolitan Archives

My 4x Great Grandfather was the publican of The Crown, 7 Essex Street certainly from about 1812 until at least 1821, possibly until late 1820's. His name was John Kerslake. Four of his seven children were born here too and baptised at St Clement Danes Church. His eldest daughter died there in 1821.
John of The Crown, Essex Street, The Strand is recorded in an Old Bailey Court Case dated Jan 10 1816 as the victim of a theft by a William Jefford and then again the same day for theft by his 'servant' Sarah Sturdwick also at The Crown, Essex Street etc. His eldest daughter Sophia Kerslake is called as a witness in another trial December 1 1819. She is living at The Crown, Essex Street. Her father 'runs the establishment' and the prisoner William Tapper (who was accused of theft, at another pub), was a lodger there. William Tapper was found guilty and the punishment was DEATH.
John Kerslake advertised regularly in Exeter's local papers (his place of birth and marriage), encouraging clientele from Devon and Cornwall to visit The Crown. *

Egyptian Lodge Freemasons membership initiated September 1813, John Kerslake, Victualler, Crown, Essex street, 1814 to 1821

In 1819, the poll lists John Kerslake as a victualler at 7 Essex street, Strand
