State of the Poll - fourth day
Whitbread 1563

Freeholders of the County of Middlesex.
Mr Whitbreads majority goes on steadily and uniformly. Every nerve has been strained by our opponent to swell his numbers on this days poll, but again we have signally triumphed. There is but one circumstance that can prejudice our cause - heedless confidence in the superior strength which we possess. It is this which may prevent its full development. Relax not in your efforts. Remember that Official Circulars on the other side must be met by vigous efforts on ours. Mr Mellish has condescended to borrow the plumes of Mr Whitbread. He calls himself the "Friend of the People!" Choose for yourselves. Gentlemen, which of these "Friends" shall represent you in Parliament - he who depends upon the undue influence of Ministerial Circulars, or he who relies upon your free and independent Suffrages. Be prompt - be firm - and you must be victorious. By order of the Commmittee.

Globe 11 April 1820
Coroners Inquest.
Robbery and Murder.
An inquisition was held on Friday last at the house of Mr Benjamin King, the White Horse Tavern, Church street, Chelsea, before Thomas Stirling Esq, coroner, on the body of Mr Thomas Marks, a respectable gentleman, who resided at Battersea. The body of the deceased was discovered on last Thursday morning by some watermen floating on the water going through the bridge ; they took it out, and carried it to the bone housr, near Chelsea Church, for the Coroners Inquest.
The body was much bloated and appeared to have been some days in the water; he was about thirty five years of age, and was not heard of since the evening of the 21st of last month, until found drowned. No evidence being before the Jury how he came in the water, they returned a verdict, found drowned.
On Saturday morning when the undertakers men came to strip the body, in order to put it into the coffin, they discovered a fracture on the left side of the head, and a stab, as if from a bayonet or dirk, under the breast. The friends of the deceased caused the Coroner to issue his warrant, and the same Jury were summoned again.
It appeared on stripping the deceased that his gold watch was found next his skin, inside his drawers, under his knee; he had only three penny worth of halfpence about him, and his pocket book was found in the skirt pocket of his coat with some letters in it, which led to the identity of the deceased.
Mr Keele, of Cheyne Walk, Chelsea, surgeon, examined the body; he probed the wound, which in his opinion was the cause of his death. It appeared that the deceased had received 100 pounds in notes two days before his leaving home, and whether he was robbed of them or not could not be ascertained. It was supposed from his watch being found concealed as it was, that the deceased finding himself attacked by robbers, put the watch in his drawers for safety, and that after he had been robbed and murdered, his body was thrown into the river, but in what part could not be ascertained.
Verdict - Wilful Murder against some person or persons unknown.
